Every day I drive from San Antonio from Seguin on IH 10.I usually stop at a convenience store in the morning for coffe on my way, Alamo Travel Center.
I noticed that there was a gentleman hanging banners for a new shop opening behind the gas station, saying they do balancing on tires. A few weeks later I noticed my vehicle shaking and thought I would give this new shop my business. When I pulled up I was greated by the mechanic before I had a chance to get of my car. I shrugged it off as an eager new business owner.
I explained my problem and he said the vibration could be fixed by "trueing and balancing the tires". I had never heard of truing but assumed he must know what he's talking about. He pulled my vehicle into his shop to begin the work and thats when I began to notice the problems. He raised my car onto floor jacks and began running it while shining a light while they rotated.
He explained this method was far better than the computer diagnostics. After some how determining, through his super ex ray vision, they were not perfectly round he began to shave the rubber off of my tires. Then through another bout of his super powers he was able to balance my tires without taking them off of the car, and also without adding or subtracting any weights. I was very uneasy about the situation but figured I dont understand too much about automotive repairs so I decided not to question his methods.
I took the car and at first believed he may really be on to something because it seemed to actually drive ok. That thought quickly faded though, After a couple days I began to notice a wobble in the front end. This time I took it back in to where I bought the tires. They proceeded to tell me the tread on my tirs had been altered and I needed to replace them.
Although it was time consuming and a hassle I wasnt too worried becuase they where still under a replacment warranty, or so I thought. They then told me because the tread had been shaved off it voided any warranty I had on the tires. I returned to Geneco to tell him what I found out and he said he could not help me with cost of new tires, but he could get me a quote on some. Thats when I realized the scam.
He used an outdated method of tire repair to get me on the road for a couple days knowing I would have to come back.
I payed over $300 for his work and then had to pay for my own tire replacement as well.AVOID THIS SHOP!!!!
